Anar season is the best time of year. Typically starting in September, with the top harvest in mid-October, pomegranate season is when you can get delicious, sweet and tart pomegranates at your local grocery market. Trader Joe’s carries them as well, but they tend to be smaller and less juicy. I’ve seen the best quality pomegranates at Persian markets and even at Costco.
Pomegranate is a seasonal fruit with a sweet/tart flavor. The individual seeds are a deep red color and shaped like beautiful jewels.
Persians love anar seeds. My family eats it like ice cream – in a bowl with a spoon!
Removing seeds from anar is not an easy task. With patience and experience you can learn to seed the fruit without damaging the beautiful seeds.
- Start by cutting off the top and bottom of the pomegranate fruit.
- Slice a line from the top to the bottom of the pomegranate. Be careful not to cut too deep – you don’t want to puncture the seeds.
- Using your hands, pull apart the pomegranate until it splits in half.
- Carefully pop the seeds out. Discard the thin white inner skin.
- Keep pomegranate seeds in a covered bowl or Tupperware in the refrigerator.
- Lasts for at least a week (unless you eat it all first!).
